Reaching seniors 55+ by message

· 3 min read · Leads Fresh DB

People over 55 are one of the most valuable audiences for many offers — and one of the easiest to lose with the wrong tone. They read messages carefully, they are wary of scams, and they reward senders who are clear and respectful.

Offers that fit

  • Hearing aids, glasses, mobility and home-care products
  • Health checks, pharmacy and wellbeing services
  • Insurance, funeral plans and retirement products
  • Travel — cruises, coach tours, off-season breaks
  • Home services: energy, windows, heating, gardening

If your offer is only for one gender, say so in the order — a 55+ list can be men, women or both.

How to write the message

  • Name the company in the first words. An unknown sender is the first sign of a scam.
  • One offer, one benefit, one action. "Free hearing test at our Leeds clinic this month — reply YES and we'll call you to book."
  • Plain words, no slang, no abbreviations, and no wall of emojis.
  • Let them call you back — a real phone number or a "reply and we'll call" option works better than a link alone.
  • Never use fear or false urgency. "Your account will be closed" or "last chance today" reads like fraud, and it may break consumer-protection rules for vulnerable customers.
  • Always include a way out ("Reply STOP to opt out") and respect it.

When to send

Daytime on weekdays, in the recipient's time zone. Avoid early mornings, evenings and Sunday mornings. If people can reply or call, make sure someone is there to answer — a quick, human reply converts far better than an automatic one.

The landing page matters too

If your message has a link, the page behind it should have large text, a phone number at the top and a short form. Many over-55s read on a phone with the font size turned up — test your page that way.

An example that follows the rules above

BrightEar Clinics: free hearing check this month at our Leeds clinic, about 20 minutes, no obligation. Reply YES and we'll call you to pick a time, or call 0113 000 0000. Reply STOP to opt out.

Sender first, a concrete offer, how long it takes, two easy ways to respond, and a way out — in under 300 characters. (The clinic and number are made-up examples.)

Split the list, don't blast it

A 60-year-old still working and an 80-year-old at home are different audiences. If your offer leans one way, order the list for that gender, send in batches, and change one thing at a time — the opening words, the offer, the time of day — so you learn what moves this group instead of guessing.

Start small and measure

Send 1,000 messages, read the replies and count the opt-outs before you send 10,000. If the replies don't sound like your audience, tell your list provider — a good one can check the filter. You can test our 55+ lists in the UK, Italy and four other countries with 200 free numbers. And check the rules for each country before you start.

Questions & answers

What age range is on a 55+ list?

From 55 to 100, men, women or both.

What is the best time to text older customers?

Weekday daytime in their own time zone, when someone from your side can answer replies and calls.

Should I put a link in the message?

You can, but a phone number or a "reply YES and we'll call you" option often works better with this age group, and looks less like a scam.
